01:36 am - ConPlayer
I am insane
I am going to finish the alpha2 of ConPlayer as i have it... and then I am going to seriously rethink how I am doing this.

I am not sure if i should stick with a pure HTML 5 user interface, or make a "real" UI... Possibly keep both.

I am thinking of making a completely stand alone single executable file app with no dependencies that will use libav. If i make it a stand alone app... which UI tool kit do I use? GTK+, QT, wxWidgets. What do I use to output the video and audio, SDL, OpenGL, OpenAL, PortAudio?

Or another option is to start hosting my own MPlayer2 builds instead of using an external source... if the current version is appealing.

Mainly I need to figure out what works and what does not, and how it will work best... I need to rethink things now that I have more experience with the process.

10:18 am - New Years Food
New Years is going to be at a board game geek gathering... so I am challenging my self to make food that is good for gamers...

It needs to be:

  • Healthy

  • Delicious

  • Hand held, or non spill

  • Non greasy (no fingerprints on game cards)

So my solution is to make stuffed bread... basically healthy hot pocket style meals...

I have been playing around with bread, and found a healthy tasty bread that I like... and I experimented with a chicken and broccoli stuffing, where I learned allot.

  • The rolls will expand during the second rise, make them smaller than you think

  • If the rolls touch while backing, the crust won't form, and the filling will leak out there.

  • Salt and season slight more than you would normally in the filling

  • Don't put anything fancy like wheat germ or shredded cheese on top of the loaf... it leads to crumbs

So my plans for Sunday (New Years) is 8 buns each of the following filling

  • Shredded braised beef with carrots, celery, and asparagus.

  • Herb Pork with apples and red cabbage

  • Lemon Chicken with green beans

  • Turkey and broccoli

  • Vegetable curry

01:52 am - Food Experiments
Today (Saturday... it is not the next day until I sleep DAMMIT) for lunch I decided to do a fridge vacuum and find stuff to throw together. [info]lethann was feeling sick, so wanted plain white rice... and I decided to make something for me to pour over the rice... since I wanted more than plain white rice.

What i learned was that the next time I make a dark roux for brown gravy, cook the roux with some minced onions... the onions will break down over the long cooking time of the roux, and it ROCKS.

11:07 pm - Dinner
Tonight's dinner went very well. I made pork schnitzel, a dill gravy, garlic green beans, and spaetzle.

The spaetzle was the easiest... i bought it from Aldi. I can make my own, but the one from Aldi tastes as good. I have tried the bagged spaetzle from Publix (Knorr brand) and it tasted chalky. I have also tried the ones that Harry's Farmer's Market sells (we bought one bag of each)... and they were not bad, but the one from Aldi was awesome... The ingredients are flour and eggs... nothing else.

The rest I made by hand.Read more... )

02:34 pm - Dinner
Dinner last night went very well. I made Ribeye steaks with caramelized onions, (un)mashed potatoes, and roasted garlic green beans. I had meant to make a brown gravy for the mashed potatoes, but I ended up running out of time.Read more... )
